Since the original Insight that we started our project with came with air conditioning we thought it a shame to waste. So, with a few strokes in Sketchup we put together a simple bracket which allows us to mount the original AC compressor as well as the original Insight belt tensioner. Because the water pump on the 1.2L TDI is driven off the timing belt there is no large water pump pulley to make room for. As a result, the AC compressor fits like it was an original item on the 1.2L TDI. Another happy coincidence.
Update: The AC was ditched as a result of interference problems associated with the 1.2L engine installation. At a future time we may try to put the AC back in the car. But in the name of simplicity and reducing out headaches we've chosen not to mess with the AC.
